New Name Application for a Company

This guide covers how to apply for a new name and how to go through the appeal process.

The first step to setting up a company in Singapore would be to apply for a company name. Before you select the name of your choice, please do a background check to ensure its availability at Bizfile (link below).

  1. To begin proceedings, you’ll need to head down to Bizfile, ACRA’s online platform for businesses at https://www.bizfile.gov.sg/.
  2. Select ‘Explore E-services’ on the top menu and select ‘Local Company’ in the dropdown menu.
  3. Under the ‘Starting’ section, click on Application for New Company Name.
  4. To finish up this section, you will need to have ready information on the name of your company, SSIC Code, and Director and Shareholder details. You’ll also need a Singpass account for all Bizfile transactions.
  5. To begin, select your company classification. Most start-ups tend to go for ‘Exempt Private Company Limited by Shares’. There are numerous benefits to this classification, some of them including more relaxed annual filings with ACRA. More details can be found in the article titled ‘Which type of Company should I go for?’.
  6. Next, key in your available company name and select Pte. Ltd as its suffix.
  7. Once you have keyed in your name, key in the SSIC codes for your primary and secondary activities.
  8. Then fill up your director information and click ‘Submit’. You will be prompted to pay the cost of S$15 subsequently to round off the application

Congratulations, you have completed the new name application phase and your name will be reserved for up to 4 months. WealthBridge offers company incorporation services in Singapore.

Name Appeal Process

The next part of this guide highlights the name appeal process. Sometimes, your name will be unavailable for usage as another company might be using or have reserved a similar name. In these situations, you can opt to go for a name appeal.

If you do click ‘yes’ on the name appeal option, you will be prompted to fill up a 500-character description on why you require the name.

You will also see an attachment field where you can attach any documents that will support your name appeal. Such documents include

  • ‍Client Contracts agreed with the name company is appealing for
  • Letter stating the meaning/significance of the name
  • Any other supporting documents from parent/related companies

The name appeal is filed with the new name application and can take up to 2 weeks to be processed. In the event that it is rejected, the S$15 cost incurred will be forfeit and will not be refunded.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use the name Honest-Bee for my honey manufacturing plant?

Nope, usage of punctuation marks does not mean that the name is ‘different’.  With regard to the confusion over identical names, the Registrar set out the following regulations to clarify.

(a) In determining whether a Singapore Company name is identical to another, the following shall be disregarded:

(i) “The”, where it is the first word of the name;

(ii) “Private”, “Pte”, “Sendirian”, “Sdn”, “Limited”, “Ltd”, “Berhad” and “Bhd”;

(iii) the following words and expressions where they appear at the end of the name: “company”, “and company”, “corporation”, “Incorporated”, “Asia”,“Asia Pacific”, “International”, “Singapore”, “South Asia”, “South East Asia” and “Worldwide”;

(iv) any word or expression which, in the opinion of the Registrar, is intended to represent any word or expression in sub-paragraph (iii);

(v) the plural version of the name;

(vi) the type and case of letters, spacing between letters and punctuation marks; and

(b) the symbol “&” is deemed to have the same meaning as the word “and”.

2. How long does it take for a name appeal to be successful

If it was a name referral to another agency, due to certain keywords such as ‘Bank’ , ‘Singapore’ or ‘Education’, it may take up to 2 months for the name referral to be processed

If it was a name appeal due to the name being similar to other names, it will be processed within 14 days. You are advised to be cautious with name selection as ACRA can direct you to change your company name if it receives complaints from similarly named companies.
